Attractions at Colleges and Universities near Mt. Vernon


Woodland Legacy is a short distance from three excellent colleges and universities: Kenyon College, Denison University, and Mount Vernon Nazarene University. These schools have a variety of activities and events open to the general public, including art galleries, nature preserves, sporting events, and live theatrical performances and concerts. Most of these attractions are either free or very affordable.

Kenyon College Attractions

Brown Family Environmental Center (BFEC) is a nature preserve that is part of Kenyon College campus. The preserve has over 500 acres of prairie and woodland habitats and close to nine miles of hiking trails. The Kokosing River also runs through the preserve. Best of all, the BFEC is open to the public. This is a great place to enjoy hiking, birdwatching, wildlife photography, and other outdoor activities. The center also offers a number of events and programs to the public, including nature programs, school field trips, and summer camps for kids.

The Gund Gallery is Kenyon College's contemporary art museum. While the primary focus of Gund Gallery is visual arts, they also offer lectures, musical performances and workshops, and film study. Events and exhibitions happen year-round and are open to the public at no charge. Programs related to current exhibitions are also available to the public.

If you're interested in college football, Kenyon College has an NCAA Division III football team, the Kenyon Owls. The Owls are part of the North Coast Athletic Conference. The team plays a ten-game schedule, with five home games at McBride Field, Kenyon College's on-campus stadium.

Denison University Attractions

The Michael D. Eisner Center for the Performing Arts is the primary location for performances held on the Denison College campus. The center includes a 400-seat proscenium theater, a 255-seat recital hall, a 156-seat dance studio, and a 150-seat studio theater. Numerous plays, concerts, lectures, and recitals are held throughout the year at the center. Note that, while almost all productions open to the public are free to attend, reservations are required.

The Denison Museum is a teaching museum located in the Michael D. Eisner Center. The museum has a collection of over 9,000 historical artifacts, primarily from the Americas, Europe, and Asia. A focal point of the Denison Museum is the Burke Gallery, which contains displays pulled from the museum's artifacts and displays of visiting exhibitions.

Mount Vernon Nazarene University Attractions

The Schnormeier Gallery, located in the Mount Vernon Nazarene University's Buchwald Center, hosts exhibits from students, alumni, and professional artists from around the world. Like the university, the exhibits tend to be religious in nature.

The R.R. Hodges Chapel Auditorium is an 1,800 seat auditorium that features a 3-manual, 50-rank pipe organ and amazing acoustics. A number of performances are held at the auditorium during the year, including an annual rendition of G. F. Handel's Messiah. Tickets for performances are very reasonable, usually $5 per person.
